VMware

Maximize uptime in your datacenter and reduce downtime management costs by enabling vSphere Fault Tolerance (FT) for your virtual machines. FT provides zero downtime, zero data loss, and continuous availability for your applications, without the cost and complexity of traditional hardware or software clustering solutions.

Features

The following is a list of the key features of vSphere Fault Tolerance (FT).

  • Seamless stateful failover. Automatically trigger seamless stateful failover when the protected virtual machines fail to respond; resulting in zero downtime, zero data loss continuous availability.
  • Automatic creation of secondary virtual machines. Automatically trigger the creation of a new secondary virtual machine after failover, to ensure continuous protection to the application.
  • Compatibility with all types of shared storage. FT works with all types of shared storage Fibre Channel, NAS or iSCSI.
  • Compatibility with all operating systems. FT works with all operating systems* supported with VMware vSphere.
  • Compatibility with existing DRS and HA clusters. FT works with existing DRS and HA clusters and only an additional dedicated gigabit Ethernet network. The tight integration with DRS gives you advanced load balancing and optimized initial placement of virtual machines.
  • Compatibility with vSphere hosts across patch levels. FT-specific versioning-control mechanism allows the primary and secondary VMs to run on FT-compatible hosts at different but compatible patch levels.
  • Enhanced Logging. FT can differentiate between events that are logged for a primary VM and those that are logged for its secondary VM and report why a vSphere host might not support FT.
  • Easy point and click administration. FT can be turned on or off through an easy point and click action in vSphere Client, allowing administrators to use the capability as needed.
  • High availability even in maintenance mode. Disable vSphere HA when FT-enabled virtual machines are deployed in a cluster, allowing for cluster maintenance operations without turning off FT.

*VMware Fault Tolerance is supported with virtual machines with only a single virtual processor.
