Overview
VMware and IBM share a large intersection of joint customers. Together, IBM and VMware offer simplified deployment and lowered operational costs, allowing customers to implement a flexible and scalable computing environment that helps drive their business objectives. VMware's alliance with IBM cuts across all IBM's key businesses: software, hardware and services.
VMware and IBM Software are working together to simplify deployment of IBM solutions and IBM Middleware on VMware virtual infrastructure. Benchmarks, deployment guides, reference configurations and customer references are in various stages of completion across the IBM Software brands. Read on to learn more how you can gain the benefits of combining industry-leading VMware virtualization with the critical functionality of IBM Software solutions.
IBM DB2 Information Management Software
AMD, IBM and VMware continue to collaborate on leveraging IBM System x servers, Next-Generation AMD Opteron processors, and VMware Infrastructure 3 to offer a robust virtualization platform to small and medium-sized enterprises. Running VMware virtual machines on IBM System x servers based on AMD Opteron processors, with IBM DB2 9 hosting web-based database application workloads, can provide excellent price/performance ratios, thanks to the flexibility of virtual platforms, which provide cost-effective server consolidation and disaster recovery.

IBM Rational Software Platform
Rational Software and VMware have developed a production-proven solution that provides an automated test lab of virtual machines for application functional testing. This solution dramatically streamlines software testing and reduces costs.

IBM Tivoli Management Software
Tivoli Software has integrated with VMware products to allow customers to monitor, provision and backup VMware virtual environments using Tivoli Monitoring and Tivoli Storage Manager. In addition, Tivoli Usage and Accounting Manager allows customers to track usage and related costs of their virtualized assets so they can assess and charge departments for the resources they consume.
Tivoli Monitoring for Virtual Servers helps you identify and resolve virtual server availability and performance issues. This extension of the IBM Tivoli Monitoring family centrally monitors server virtualization, consolidation, resource performance and availability at the enterprise level.

Tivoli Storage Manager
IBM has created a field guide explaining how to configure the TSM Linux x86 client to run on the VMware ESX service console operating system, various methods for performing virtual disk backup, and guidance on several different restore scenarios. This document is primarily focused on VMware ESX; however, the backup and recovery methods discussed in this document are also possible with VMware Server with minor alterations.

Tivoli Usage and Accounting Manager
IBM Systems, Windows, UNIX, Linux and other servers that power important applications often run at a fraction of actual capacity. Virtualizing those operations enables pooling of resources that an entire organization can draw on, as needed. But when multiple departments use a single application — or when multiple applications run on one server — it has been logistically difficult to accurately assess and charge for use. IBM Usage and Accounting Manager solves the problem with user-friendly Web-based reports and invoicing that show exactly who uses what and how much they use. While the software masks the underlying complexity, it delivers detailed information about the use of shared resources.
