VMware Academic Program Overview

The VMware Academic Program (VMAP) is a comprehensive program designed specifically for the academic community. The program enables qualifying academic institutions worldwide to gain easy access to cutting-edge virtualization technology and resources at no charge.

VMAP accelerates instruction and research in the rapidly expanding area of virtualized infrastructure by providing faculty and students with access to the virtualization technologies most widely used in commercial production environments.

  • Faculty can use VMware software under specific program usage guidelines, free of charge, in a wide variety of areas of academic research and classroom instruction.
  • Students can use this software as part of their coursework or research projects.

In addition to free licenses for instruction and research, VMware also provides academic institutions and affiliated organizations special discounts on VMware software and support when deployed as a part of their IT infrastructure.

Registration Quesions

I completed an application for the free licenses program, but have not received an answer yet.  Who should I contact?
Please allow 5 to 7 days to receive a reply to your application.  If this time has elapsed and you have still not heard back from us, please send a message to vmap-response@vmware.com

Can I join the program and request free licenses to evaluate VMware products for potential future use?
You do not need to join the VMAP program to evaluate VMware products.  Full versions of VMware products are available for download from http://www.vmware.com/download/ and may be evaluated for periods varying from 30- to 60-days.

Product Questions

Will you be adding new products to the free licenses program?
We review the product offering on a regular basis and make changes as needed.  Just recently we added VMware Fusion to the list of products given its growing use within academic institutions.

Can I use each license or serial number across multiple machines in my department?
Yes.  Per the terms of the EULA for the VMware Academic and Research Program (“Academic EULA”), you may make and use an unlimited number of copies of the software, solely for the educational, instructional and non-commercial research purposes of your academic or research institution.

Can I request licenses for students in my department?
If you want to provide licenses to students for use on their personal computers for class related work, we have separate 180-day licenses for that purpose.  Upon approval into VMAP, you will have an opportunity to request such licenses.  When placing a request, please indicate the following information:

  • Title(s) of the course(s) or research topic(s) in which the students will be using the licenses
  • Number of students per course or research topic
  • VMware products for which you are requesting the licenses – we currently offer student licenses for VMware Workstation for Windows or Linux, and VMware Infrastructure 3.

I would like to use Virtual Center Management Server (VCMS) with the VMware Infrastructure 3 (VI3) licenses included in VMAP.  Can I do it?
VCMS will not work with the free VI3 licenses, because we currently deliver one license per product per department.  Each ESX server included with VI3 will have the same license number as the rest, and VCMS will not be able to distinguish between them.

My colleague wants to use the free VMware licenses for his/her course/research work.  Can I share these licenses?
Per the terms of the Academic EULA, the free licenses may be shared with colleagues in the same department if the use meets the requirements described in the EULA and the program description.

How can I get access to source code?
In addition to our discounted and free license benefits, we offer our Source Access program to select researchers in academia.  Once a research proposal has been approved, the program provides access to our ESX and Workstation 6 source code as well as the support of an R&D technical liaison.
