Happy New Year 2009!

If you have New Year resolutions as below

  • Going home after work and never get a call until next day morning

Virtualizing servers are just half the battle. The rest of the half is achieved by having a Virtualized shared storage.

After installing VM ware server 2 i clicked the Vm Ware server Home page and the following error (alert) was displayed:

worldwind1-pc:8333 uses and invalid security certificate. the certificated is not trusted because it's self assigned

(error code: sec_error_ca_cert_invalid)

Can some one please please advice me on rectifying this issute

VCB Update in ESX on the IBM System i

So I have the VCB working, but not the way I had hoped. Right now I am using the LAN version, not the SAN version. I have opened up a case with IBM Tech Support, but this is a bad week if you need tech support! All the good people are on vacation :)

So I wrote a batch file on my VCB Server, well 2 of them actually, mount.bat & unmount.bat

Created my c:\mnt directory, shared it, added the member to that file in QUSRSYS that I can never remember the name of....QAZ........ something like that.....

Then I wrote a CL on the System i, used sbmnwscmd to call the mount, saved the files I wanted through /QNTC and then called the unmount. Lather, rinse, repeat.....until all my vm's are backed up.

Worked great! Now when I get the SAN part working, I'll post again.

Oh, on a personal note: I am making the switch to Ubuntu, I have the Notes 8.5 Beta 2 running, in my VM, and as soon as I get all the kinks worked out I'm using Ubuntu as my main OS, and will run Windows as the VM, for only when I need it. I might start another Blog on Ubuntu. Vmware really needs to get the vi client for linux working!!!!!

Some may think it's sad that this is how I am spending my New Years Eve, but with a 3 year old, 20 month, and 7 week old at home, and a bruised knee that has me gimping around, I think I'm doing pretty good :D

This initial post is a get to know me. To be honest this is my first blog I have created. So lets start.

My education regarding computer technology is straight from the School of Hard Knocks. I was the kid that was a jack of many trades and a competent user of none. Lets not even suggest a master of none. I've crashed computers, reinstalled OSes, failed to reinstall OSes, infected computers with viruses, etc. However, I love trying something new and want to get to the end as quickly as possible.

This brings me to VMware. I believe that some focus on maintaining a clean host OS will allow me to be the screw up I am on some VMs. I also believe that as I venture forward I need to be able to talk intelligently about cloud computing.

So what am I doing today you ask. I just bought a new laptop because I was a little too rough with the last. I'm a broke college kid so I got a cheap commodity Gateway. The specs include:

  • Gateway T-6330u
  • Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1
  • Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor T3200
    1MB L2 Cache, 2GHz, 667 MHz FSB
  • 3 GB DDR2
  • Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
    with up to 384 MB of Dynamic Video Memory

The first thing I did when I started the computer was make sure the firewall was on and then immediately went to VMware.com. I downloaded VM Workstation 6.5 evaluation. I do intend to buy the package but like I said I am a broke college kid who can't currently fiance it.

My intentions are to:

  • create a slim host OS with the original Vista
  • maintain a Vista VM with all of my work software
  • maintain a Vista VM were I play with new software
  • create a VM of the beta Windows 7
  • create a VM of the popular Ubuntu linux distro

In addition I'm an Aries, I like the show Chuck, franchise Stargate, and comic Ironman. Well now that you know me better than most, time to get back to screwing up my first attempt at creating a VM.

VMware ConverterでP2VしたWindows仮想マシンで、ネットワーク接続に物理環境と同じIPアドレスを割り当てようとすると、「このネットワークアダプタ用に入力されたIPアドレスは別のアダプタに既に割り当てられています。」というようなエラーメッセージが表示される場合がある。
ここで指摘されるネットワークアダプタは物理環境で認識していたもので、Windowsのプラグアンドプレイ機能によってP2V後の最初の起動の際にクリーンアップされるべきものだ。ところが、デバイスマネージャには表示されないものの、レジストリ上にゴミとして残ってしまいIPアドレスの競合を引き起こしてしまうことがある。

VCのIPアドレスを変更すると、管理下のESXは全て「応答なし(not responding)」になる。

VCとESXの接続状態の確認は、VCからのポーリングではなく、ESXから定期的(60秒毎？)に生きていることを通知するしくみになっている(VCはこの通信をudp/902で待ち受けている)。VCのIPアドレスが変更されてもESXには変更が通知されないため、ESXはこの設定ファイルに記録された古いIPアドレスに通知を送り続ける。VCはこの通知を受け取れず「応答なし」とみなしてしまうことになる。

このような状況になった場合、もっとも容易に復旧する方法は、
１．VI Clientのインベントリ画面でデータセンタを選択し、「ホスト」タブを開く
２．ShiftやControlボタンを使ってESXを複数選択する
３．右クリックし、まとめて「切断」する
４．ESXの切断が終わったら、同様に右クリックし、まとめて「接続」する

再度接続しなおすことで、ESXは新しいVCのIPアドレスを認識することになる。
切断中はVMware DRSといった機能は動作しないが、仮想マシンの動作そのものには一切影響しない。

VI Clientで複数選択ができないバージョンの場合、下記のスクリプトを使用することでESXを1台ごと切断・接続する手間を省くことができる。

New-VMは、仮想マシンの新規作成だけでなく、-Templateオプションを使用してテンプレートからのデプロイを行うこともできる重要なコマンドレットだ。テンプレートからのデプロイ時には、OSCustomizationSpecを併用することで、カスタマイゼーションも実現できる。
ただ、VI ClientではできるのにNew-VMコマンドレットではできない操作が2つある。
・テンプレートではなく仮想マシンをクローンする
・カスタマイゼーションでIPアドレスを指定する

PMであるShanklinの書いた下記FAQに、"How can I change a VM's IP address?"というタイトルで、両方の制限をVI APIネイティブに解決する方法が紹介されている。

VirtualMachineのCloneVM_Taskメソッドを使用する方法で、VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineCloneSpecを直接作成するという流れだ。少し行数は多いが一見難しくなさそうに見える。
ところが、実際には書かれているサンプルスクリプトはVirtualMachineCloneSpecの中の一部の必須プロパティの指定を省略してあるようだ。リファレンスガイドの下記を見ればわかるのだがこれは結構根気が必要。

Step1. Insert your DVD disc into your DVD-Rom, then run the software, click "Load DVD" button and add the DVD file. You can also add DVD/IFO from your hard disk by clicking "Load File".

Step2. This software can convert DVD to various video formats such as MPEG-4, AVI, WMV, FLV, 3GP, VOB, etc. Click the "Format" drop down list to select a format. If you want to copy DVD to computer in 1:1 lossless quality, please select "Lossless DVD Copy (*.vob)".

If you don't know much about mobile players, just select a format according to the name of your mobile player. For example, if you want to copy DVD to iPhone, just select "iPhone Video MPEG-4 (*.mp4)", and the default setting works great. If you want to customize the output video, you can click the "Settings" button next to the format field to open the Settings window and set video resolution, frame rate, bit rate, encoder, etc. See the figure below:

Step3. Select Subtitle and Audio
Regular DVD movies usually have several subtitles such as English, French, German, etc. You can select one you prefer. You can also delete the subtitle by selecting "No Subtitle". Selecting Audio is the same.

After the above steps, click "Start" to start conversion.


Part2. How to crop, combine and edit DVD movie?


After you load the DVD file. If you want to cut the black edges of the DVD movie, you can click the "Crop"button, and then you will see a pop up windows (See the figure below). There is a frame in dashed line around the movie video; you can drag it to cut the black edges.

More over, you can click the Crop drop-down list to select a Crop model you prefer, for example: "Cut off top and bottom black edges". You can even type the number in the box to cut off black border accurately.

If you want to combine several DVD chapters into one file, on the main interface, there is a check box "Merge into one file", select it, then you will only get one output file instead of several files by chapters.

If you want to snatch pictures from DVD, while you previewing the DVD movie, there will be a small camera icon below the preview window, click it when you want to snacth the picture, it support output picture as JPEG or BMP format.

You can click the "Effect" button and customize the brightness, saturation, contrast, volume, etc (See the figure below). You can even apply special effects such as "Emboss", "Negative", "Old film" and "Gray" by selecting an effect from drop-down list.

Part3. How to extract and rip audio from DVD to MP3 for iPod nano, shuffle and other MP3 players?


This software can extract and rip DVD audio track to MP3, WMA, WAV, AC3, AAC, M4A and so on, if you want to rip the music from DVD to your MP3 players such as iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle, Creative Zen, Zune and so on. After you load your DVD movie, in the main interface, select the output format as MP3, and then start conversion. If you want to get better music quality, you can select a higher audio bit rate and sample rate in the settings window.
After the conversion, drag the audio file to iTunes library, connect your iPod nano or iPod shuffle to your computer, and click iTunes "File -> Sync iPod", OK. If you don't have iTunes, you can download it for free from Apple official site

Part4. How to put DVD clips on Youtube, Myspace?


This software can convert DVD to FLV format for Youtube, Myspace and other video download sites. So you can share your own DVD clips with friends. After your movie is imported, select FLV as the output video format. Then log in Youtube, Myspace upload your video. But a whole DVD movie might be very large. By default, this software will convert the whole DVD to one file; if you just want several chapters of the DVD, you can just select the chapters you want to extract a part of DVD clips from DVD(you can preview the DVD clip before converting it).
Or you can click "Trim" button to open the trim panel, drag the trim bar to set start time and end time to convert a clip from your movie. You can also type the exact time values in the Set Start Time field and Set End Time field to trim video.

VI PowerShellのサンプルとしてよく見かける下記の記述では、どうやらCold Migrationしかできないようだ。VMotionしようとすると、inner errorと言われしまう。結構はまり所かも。

Move-VM -VM (Get-VM "vm-name") -Destination (Get-VMHost "host-name")

ホストの変わりにリソースプールを指定すれば成功するのだが、リソースプールではなくてESX直下にVMotionしたい場合、回りくどく下記のように書く必要がある。

Move-VM -VM (Get-VM "vm-name") -Destination (Get-Resourcepool -Name リソース -Location (Get-VMHost "host-name"))

途中、Get-Resourcepool で指定している「リソース」という名前は、ESXに自動的に生成された見えないルートリソースプールの名前。英語版の場合には「リソース」ではなく「Resource」となるのかな？（未確認）

なお、クラスタ内の場合、DRSの有無にかぎらずESXのルートリソースプールはクラスタのルートリソースプールになっているのか、コレで指定してもESXを移動しない。（エラーは発生せず、成功したように見えるが。）

これらの点について、VI PowerShellのヘルプでは下記のように注意書きされている。

Moving a virtual machine in a cluster is only possible if the virtual machine is in a resource pool in that cluster.

実際の挙動を確認した限りは下記が正解に近いのではないだろうか。

クラスタの有無にかかわらず、VMotionの移行先にはリソースプールだけが指定できます。また、クラスタ内では（たとえESXのルートリソースプールを指定したとしても）ESX間の移行はできません。

なお、確認は ESX3.0.3 / VC 2.0.3 および、ESX 3.5 Update1 / ESXi 3.5 Update1 / VC 2.5 Update1 で実施した。

Using IP Multicast with VMware ESX 3.5

骨子をまとめてしまうと以下の3つ。

  • ESX3.5 Update2以降では、VMotionやNICチーミングのフェールオーバが発生してもマルチキャストの受信がすぐに再開される (ユニキャストのSwitch Nortificationに相当する機能として、IGMP Membership Fake Queryが実装されている）
  • デフォルトではIGMP v3のQueryを投げるが、IGMP v2で動作しているゲストOSはこれに対してIGMP Reportを応答しない。v3で動作しているゲストOSはv2のQueryにも応答するため、ゲストOSでv2を使っているものが存在している場合やバージョンが不明な場合は、ESXの詳細設定(Advanced Settings)で、Net.IGMPVersionを2とするのが安全。
  • ESX3.5 Update1以前のリリースでは、マルチキャストルータのIGMP Queryの間隔（多くはデフォルト60秒）を小さく設定することで、VMotion時等のマルチキャスト受信の中断時間を小さくすることができる。
なお、NICチーミングの負荷分散アルゴリズムでIPハッシュを使用している場合には、バージョンや構成によらずNICフェールオーバ時のマルチキャスト受信の中断はおきない。
