Plan 9 from Bell labs is a distributed operating system, which features one unified communication protocol (9P) to marshal local and remote services in a transparent and intuitive way.

This virtual appliance is designed primarily to expose first time users to Plan 9's somewhat novel user interface, which includes Rio (the window manager), Acme (an integrated "programmer's editor"), sam (a lightweight text editor), and 8c (the native C compiler).
