Shah Investor’s Home Ltd. Choose VMware Virtualization to Smoothen Stock Trading

Delivers 100 Percent Application Availability of Business-Critical Systems While Reducing Costs

Bangalore, India, 09 December 2009 — VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization solutions from the desktop through the datacenter and to the cloud, today announced that Shah Investor’s Home Ltd, a leading Gujarat (India) based stock broking, wealth management and depository services provider to investors, has deployed VMware’s industry-leading virtualization platform to cost-effectively enhance availability and redundancy of business-critical systems, including an ODIN (Open Dealer Integrated Network) trading and risk management platform.

By leveraging the VMware virtualization platform, Shah Investor’s Home Ltd has been able to optimize its existing servers by increasing average CPU utilization from the current level of 25 - 40 percent to 60 percent, whiles achieving a server consolidation ratio of 3:1. Further, it has also helped the company switch memory and CPU capacity to support database processing once a trading day is over, while reducing power and cooling costs by 20 percent. The combination of virtualization running on servers with multi-core processors has improved performance by 30 - 40 percent.

Jinal Shah, Manager, Information Technology, Shah Investor’s Home Ltd said “VMware has ensured that applications such as the ODIN trading and risk management platform meet our standards of performance and availability. If we cannot complete trades, we lose clients and revenue. Deploying VMware has given our senior management team peace of mind that we can continue to operate in almost any circumstances.”

VMware virtualization has enabled Shah Investor’s Home Ltd to consolidate and virtualize the physical servers running critical business applications. The solution also allows Shah Investor’s Home to run virtual servers on alternative physical hosts in the event of a hardware problem and allocate computing resources to applications as required. They have created a clone trading application that can immediately switch on if anything happens to the primary system.

T. Srinivasan, Managing Director, VMware India & SAARC said, “Organizations of every size and industry are adopting VMware virtualization solutions in India. It is very encouraging to see VMware solutions helping customers like Shah Investor’s Home Ltd to smoothen their business-critical systems like ODIN trading and risk management platform. It is again a testimonial for the unmatched efficiency, robustness and reliability of our products in the market”.

Headquartered in Gujarat, Shah Investor’s Home Ltd has around 70 employees and is now running 10 virtual machines on three host Dell blade servers and one backup machine supported by an EMC storage system with 2.1TB capacity. The VMware platform at work includes VMware Infrastructure 3 with ESX 3.5, VMware VMotion™, VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS), VMware High Availability (HA) and VMware vCenter™ Server.

In December 2008, Shah Investor’s Home Ltd decided to engage with Avnet Technology Solutions India and found that their core business applications, SQL database and web servers operated very well when tested in a virtualized environment and decided to deploy VMware virtualization over Citrix and Microsoft solutions. Avnet then helped in designing and deploying VMware Infrastructure that support Shah Investor’s most business- critical ODIN platform, which executes 30,000 to 40,000 trades on behalf of its clients through a computer-to-computer link with Indian stock exchanges.

Virtualization dramatically improves the efficiency and availability of resources and applications in an organization. Most internal resources are underutilized under the old “one server, one application” model and IT managers spend too much time managing servers rather than innovating. An automated datacenter, built on a VMware virtualization platform, lets organizations respond to market dynamics faster and more efficiently than ever before.

Recently launched and now generally available, VMware vSphere™ 4 delivers resources, applications—even servers—when and where they’re needed. VMware customers typically save 50-70 percent on overall IT costs by consolidating their resource pools and delivering highly available machines with VMware vSphere 4.

Through virtualization, VMware has helped more than 600 companies in India] like Shah Investor’s Home Ltd to lower their capital expenditure and operational costs, while improving operational efficiency and flexibility. VMware’s customers in India include Atrenta India, Bajaj Auto, Chitale Dairy, Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Ltd., Essel Propack, i2 Technologies, Mahindra & Mahindra and Reliance General Insurance to name a few.
